Building Excellence Grants

The Building Excellence program helps South Hampton Roads nonprofit organizations increase their development and fundraising capabilities.

Since the program's start in 2008 we have four nonprofits a year from South Hampton Roads have won Building Excellence grants. Applications for the fifth and final year of the Building Excellence program were due January 13.

Building Excellence grants provide 18 months of technical assistance services from The Curtis Group designed to help organizations build development capacity in key areas such as:

  • Mission
  • Strategic planning
  • Case statement
  • Communications and marketing
  • Volunteer recruitment
  • Fundraising
  • Recordkeeping and database management
  • Board involvement in fundraising
  • Executive director’s involvement in fundraising

Receiving a Building Excellence grant does not affect your organization’s ability to apply for grant funding through other Foundation grant programs.

Building Excellence applicants should be 501(c) 3 nonprofit organizations serving the residents of South Hampton Roads in one of the Foundation’s grant priority areas (arts and culture, education, environment, or health and human services) or initiative priority areas.
