What is The BEACH FUND?

The BEACH FUND is a dynamic group of young leaders working on some of the most exciting and challenging issues in Virginia Beach. Founded in 1998 under the auspices of The Virginia Beach Foundation, it brings together the creativity and enthusiasm of the city’s brightest young philanthropists working with more-established leaders to address our community’s needs. BEACH FUND members have an immediate impact through a grant process, selecting nonprofit organizations that address their priorities for awards. Since its inception, the BEACH FUND has contributed $97,600 to non profit organizations in our community.

How does The BEACH FUND work?

A BEACH FUND member or couple pledges $400 annually for three years to The BEACH FUND Endowment. These contributions are augmented by BEACH FUND Patrons, established donors and friends of The Virginia Beach Foundation, who contribute $1,000 annually for three years. The Patron monies and a percentage of the earnings from the BEACH FUND Endowment provide the funding for BEACH FUND Grants.

The BEACH FUND Steering Committee oversees the process of selecting grants. Using The Foundation’s Grant Guidelines and Procedures as a basis for their decisions, the Steering Committee selects the organizations or programs that address their priorities. BEACH FUND members have input through a member survey while participation on the Steering Committee rotates annually. BEACH FUND selections are forwarded to The Foundation’s Distribution Committee for final approval.

Why is The BEACH FUND good for you and your community?

Contributions last forever. Unlike annual campaigns that raise and spend contributions each year, The Virginia Beach Foundation pools contributions in an endowment, invests those funds and spends only a percentage of the fund's balance/earnings.

Gain valuable skills in civic leadership and philanthropy. The BEACH FUND provides an opportunity for younger donors to work with and learn from some of the community’s most prominent and respected leaders. BEACH FUND patrons have years of experience in community advocacy, grantmaking and investing.  Many BEACH FUND patrons have anmed funds within The Foundation.  These "charitable giving savings accounts" promote well-planned giving.

Expand your network. BEACH FUND Gatherings, usually held quarterly, are excellent networking and social occasions. Many of Virginia Beach’s outstanding leaders in business, education and government attend.The BEACH FUND also provides opportunities for members to volunteer for selected community nonprofit projects during the year.

What are the responsibilities of BEACH FUND membership

Membership in The BEACH FUND is not intended to complicate an already busy schedule. Members are asked to complete a survey indicating their charitable interest. In addition to their monetary giving, members have the opportunity to serve on a committee, volunteer for a one shot community project and socialize at meetings and/or socials.
