2004 Community Investments

“With many cutbacks in funding programs (federal, state and foundations), it is evident that The Virginia Beach Foundation is being seen as a significant regional resource for program support not only for donors but also for deserving non profit organizations. In its 14th Grant Cycle the distribution committee and fund Holders reviewed 118 Proposals. This year, the Foundation received 27 first time submissions,” stated John f. Malbon, Distribution Committee Chairman.

From Discretionary and Field-of-Interest Funds, the committee awarded $32,500.00 for program-related activities to 32 organizations having a direct impact upon Virginia Beach Residents. Other awards were based on the recommendations of Fund Advisors. “The Foundation is very pleased with the interest shown by Fund Advisors in supporting organizations in our city,” concluded Malbon.

The Virginia Beach Foundation views all awards as community investments. Only organizations with IRS 501(c)(3) status are eligible to apply.

The Virginia Beach Foundation awarded its first grants in 1988. That year, $5,000.00 was awarded to six organizations. Through May, in 2004, $669,256.00 from all sources was awarded to 116 organizations.
